ANS COACHES ARE THE BEST AT COACHES SHOWCASE

The “Coaches Showcase”, held at St. Mary’s College, is an end of season event featuring - 3 on 3, free throw and 3 point shooting competitions and ending with an all star game of 3 players from each school divided into the North and South teams.  ANS coaches Jeanne Zito and Patrick Thall were selected to coach the North Divisions combined teams.  The North girl’s team lost by just 1 point and the boys fought hard to come from behind but ran out of time loosing by 8 points.  Other highlights included a 1st place victory from the ANS boys 3 on 3 team of Jack Simpson, Joey Laco and Doug Wehrle.  Girls won 2nd place in the 3 on 3 thanks to Veronica Bohne, Emily Harvey and Annie Zito.  Each coach in the division has an opportunity to vote for the best players in the 2006-2007 league and the ANS players who were honored are;

Honorable Mention: Veronica Bohne and Annie Zito

2nd Team: Jessica Worchester, Cassie Walter, David Goodwin and Joey Laco

1st Team: Samantha Geckle and Doug Wehrle

The ANS cheerleaders put on the top performance of the evening hands down!  They stole the night with a half time routine that was perfect in unison, timing and showmanship!  A great way to end a great season!

ANS HOSTS 1st ROUND of CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT

ANS was proud to host the first round of this year’s Final Basketball Championship Tournament.  Games ran from 9:00 in the morning until 9:00 that night.  A BIG thank you to all the parents who helped make it a smooth running day from start to finish with – concession stand operators, safety monitors throughout the gym and eating area, score and time keepers and of course our athletic coaches who were there for it all to make sure everything went well.  Parents who worked are reminded to record your hours in the PPP book at school.  Call Jeanne Zito at the school if you are unclear of your hours.

2007 Season Championship Tournament

Ryken High School – St. Mary’s County

February 27th, 2007

BOYS VARSITY:  The RYKEN gym was electric during this incredible final game of the season.  Father Andrew White (FAW) drew first blood behind Nick Staufenberger and took a slim 10-8 lead after one.  Chris Campeggio was on the top of his game and controlled the boards early.  Dave Goodwin rallied ANS in the second with outstanding defense, quick passes and ball movement on offense.  ANS took a 13-12 lead into halftime.  Campeggio and Staufenberger led FAW back in the third, scoring all 7 of FAW’s points to tie the game 19-19 going into the fourth.  The Ryken gym rocked in the fourth as the teams traded the lead back and forth behind constant, deafening chants from each team’s fans.  ANS took the early lead in the fourth behind Goodwin and Joey Laco, but FAW battled back and held a 2 point lead with under a minute to go. Tyler Knode made a diving save of a loose ball which David snatched up and then drove the basket for a lay-up and foul.  David converted the free throw to give ANS a 26-25 lead with 40 seconds remaining.  Campeggio regained a 27-26 lead for FAW with a 4 foot jumper in the lane.  After an ANS timeout FAW stole the ball and called their own time-out with 18.1 remaining.  Tyler stole the in-bounds pass and dished to Joey Laco who double clutched and drew the 5th foul on Campeggio.  Joey then converted the 2 pressure free throws with 14.3 remaining giving ANS the 28-27 lead.  ANS had team fouls to give and made it difficult for FAW to get the ball up the court.  Tyler Knode rebounded a FAW shot that was tipped by Goodwin.  Knode was fouled and converted 1 of 2 FTs with 6 seconds remaining making it 29-27.  Doug Wehrle deflected the first FAW in-bounds attempt cutting the clock to 2.1 seconds.  FAW tried a ˝ court desperation shot that was partially blocked by Goodwin giving the Eagles the win and their 3rd championship in as many years.  It was an outstanding performance by both teams.  Campeggio finished with 12 points for FAW and won the Coaches “Hustle “award.  Staufenberger added 9 points for FAW.  Goodwin scored 11 points for ANS and was named the tournament MVP.  Doug Wehrle and Laco each added 8 points for ANS.

GIRLS VARSITYThe ANS girls jumped out early on SJS behind Samantha Geckle’s 11 first quarter points and took a 13-6 lead after one.  St. John’s School (SJS) struggled in the first half, making numerous turnovers caused by the intense ANS defense that would eventually cost them the game.  ANS extended the lead to 20-10 at the half as Kayla DeOca scored 5 second quarter points.  Alexis Goldsborough kept the fight up for the SJS Eagles, scoring 6 points in the first half.  SJS came out firing in the second half and looked like they were going to catch ANS as Goldsborough, Kayla Vest, Hannah Higgs and Haley Bennett rallied the team and closed the gap to 6 point, 24-18 heading into the fourth quarter.  ANS slammed the door on the comeback early in the fourth as the Lady Eagles capitalized on two quick SJS turnovers and converted them into 4 points.  Samantha Geckle pumped in 9 points in the fourth to put the game away and bring home the Championship for ANS.  Geckle finished with 20 points and was named the MVP.  Jessica Worcester added 5 points for ANS and Annie Zito dropped in four.  Goldsborough scored 10 points for SJS and received the Coaches “Hustle” award.  Vest added 4 points for SJS.  A great game by two great teams.
